Nebraska Basketball: Trey McGowens shines for new-look Huskers
McGowens played well for Nebraska basketball on Monday night.
It was a fun night to be a member of the Nebraska basketball team, and Trey McGowens certainly looked like he was having fun. Earlier on Monday, I wrote that he was the now the future force for the program. Monday night, he showed he could take on the role.
He didn’t have the biggest scoring night. The night itself belonged to Lat Mayen in what was an impressive display of individual basketball. However, McGowens certainly made his presence known. He recorded 12 points on four-of-five from the field. He made both of the three-point shots he took as well as both his three-throws.

In addition to what he provided from a scoring standpoint, he was also very active in getting his teammates involved. He tallied five assists on the evening, which was tied for the team lead. He also recorded three rebounds, and tried to be as active on the boards as possible. It was interesting to see him play such a well-rounded game, and it was no secret that Nebraska basketball moved the ball a little bit better than they have any point during the season.
If this was his audition to be the centerpiece of the team, he certainly made a compelling case. He looked comfortable within the offense, and did not try to force up too many shots. He showed exactly why he is such a dangerous player when he is on top of his game. He gets points via both driving to the rim and shooting his jumpshot.
McGowens had a great game, and it allowed him to showcase exactly what he does well. He was able to slice and dice the Rutgers defense. He has the ability to be both a great primary scorer, and a solid secondary scorer. He showed that on Monday night, and it gave Nebraska basketball a chance to come away with a solid win against a team that Nebraska basketball normally struggles with.
He needs to continue to have these types of games if Nebraska basketball wants to go far at all over these next couple of weeks. He is their de-facto go-to guy now, and Monday was the first step in the process of him becoming that.
