Nebraska football may be playing in Ireland sooner rather than later.

Although the Nebraska football trip to Dublin Ireland may be canceled for 2021, there may be a trip in the works for 2022. Instead of facing Illinois like they would have in August, there are talks that they could face Northwestern.

According to a report from the Lincoln Journal Star, there are plans in the works for Nebraska to go to Ireland for the 2022 Aer Lingus classic in Dublin.

As noted in the report, Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos indicated that plans have not been finalized as of yet.

This would certainly be an intriguing time for Nebraska football. They would certainly get more exposure by playing over in Ireland, and Northwestern is an interesting opponent.  They always seem to play Nebraska hard, and it is never a boring game when those two get together.

Nebraska would have to do some finagling with the rest of their schedule if they were to play this game. They would have to move their game against North Dakota, buy out Georgia Southern, or play on September 4.

The date for the game is August 27, 2022. That is certainly a lot closer than where I though the game would be. I thought that this game wouldn’t happen until at least 2023. However, it will be good for Nebraska football to participate in this game. A lot of exposure comes with this event, and it’s always fun leading up to the event, with several events happening for those who travel to Ireland.

I’ll be interested to see who the opponent is, and who ends up playing in this game. Hopefully Nebraska can seal the deal and get this done. A win on international turf would certainly be an exciting way to begin the season. Especially when you think about the camaraderie and such that is built on this trip, that can only set the tone for the rest of the season. Hopefully, Nebraska football will be able to get the deal done.
