Nebraska football was close to losing a member of the coaching staff.

I was reading one of Steven M. Sipple’s columns on Thursday, and he made a point in it that kind of made sense to me. The Georgia Bulldogs had their eye on Nebraska football secondaries coach Travis Fisher.

Fisher was rumored to be on Georgia head coach Kirby Smart’s shortlists, but the job eventually went to Jahmile Addae. The fact that Fisher was coveted by Smart makes a ton of sense to me.

When you look at what Fisher has done in recruiting for Nebraska over the past couple of seasons, he has managed to get a bunch of commitments from the southeastern part of the country. You may remember my praise for him as Nebraska landed several Florida kids in the 2020 class. Retainment ended up being the issue here, but he was able to land them and convince them to at least come to Lincoln.

As it stands right now, Fisher has several southern recruits on the roster Myles Farmer, Quinton Newsome, and Cam Taylor-Britt as some of the more notable players on the roster. He has up-and-coming players on the roster as well. Marquis Buford would be an example of that.

A potential Georgia job would be no surprise for Fisher. Having played football at UCF, he knows the South very well. The Tallahassee native has managed to make the South his bread-and-butter. Whether that is in terms of playing or coaching, he has been able to make a name for himself. Not only that, he seems to have decent connections as well. He has a strong baseline in that part of the country.

If anything, Georgia would be a logical progression in terms of his coaching career. When you look at how he has been able to develop some of the players on the roster, particularly the secondary, a higher-level coaching position could be in his future. Right now though, he seems focused on Nebraska. As one of the program’s best recruiters, that is a good thing.

For me personally, I wonder when Fisher is going to take that next leap. Especially if Nebraska football does well in 2021, I could see more offers coming his way. He is one of the few Nebraska football assistants at the moment whose stock is relatively high. Can he parlay that into something bigger? We will have to wait and see. However, there is a definite buzz surrounding him.
