Nebraska football is going to get a good linebacker..

A Nebraska football recruit received a top honor from his home state over the weekend as Mikal Gbayor received an accolade on Monday. He was named the New Jersey High School Player of the Year.

He recorded 56 tackles and eight sacks while playing in six games last season. He could not finish the November 15 game he played in due to injury, and his energy was missed on the defense, as his team lost by a 43-32 margin.

Now, he looks to bring that same kind of impact played to the Nebraska football program. To me, I love hearing that Nebraska football commitments are getting high school accolades. That just speaks to how good they are as football players. Gbayor was a recruit that I was particularly excited about Nebraska landing. He possesses aggressiveness and versatility, something that the Nebraska football defense is going to need. I can’t wait to see how he fits into the defense.

He is the perfect type of hybrid player for where the game is trending. Over the last couple of classes we have seen Nebraska football really focus on getting versatile athletes. That is certainly a direction that is smart to take.

Adding him to this defense, especially given the way that the defense has improved over the last year or so is going to be key. The defense finally is beginning to have a vision of what they want to do. Gbayor certainly fits into that. Not only that, you know that he is going to give a maximum effort every single time he steps on the field.

In an interview with Brian Christopherson of 247Sports, Gbayor indicated that he is focused on always giving his best effort. This sounds like the exact type of mentality that Nebraska football is going to need from its players moving forward.

"“Because I know what I’m capable of doing,” Gbayor said. “And if I’m hard on myself on the play before, on the next play I know I’m definitely going to make that play, and I know I’m definitely going to pick up speed and give it the extra 10 percent than what I gave last time … I’m going to make that sack or that play behind the line of scrimmage.”"

I’m really excited to see what he brings to the table and evidently, he has a very strong skill set. He is somebody that I think can make an impact on the Nebraska football defense right away.

I love how focus and locked and he seems as a player already. Hopefully, they’ll translate into a positive for Nebraska.
