Nebraska football would be wise to consider Isaiah Bowser.

As the transfer portal continues to get crazier by the day, I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t thinking of potential players that could help Nebraska football. In a year unlike any other, it would be great if Nebraska could land a player who could make a big impact from the transfer portal.

One of those players is former Northwestern running back Isaiah Bowser. Bowser officially announced his decision to enter the transfer portal on Saturday, and he could be an option for Nebraska at the position.

I’ll start by saying that I really like what he brings to the table. I always have. He has a tough runner who is not afraid to take on contact and get the difficult yards. He was the quintessential Northwestern type of player. He was tough, he was physical, and he was able to take on a big workload in an offense that focused a lot on running the football.

In his Northwestern career, Bowser rushed for 1,300 yards and seven touchdowns on 334 attempts. Averaging 3.9 yards per carry, he also was somewhat of a receiving back. He tallied 22 catches for 153 yards and a touchdown three years with the Wildcats.

His best season at Northwestern came in 2018. As a freshman, made a big impact. He carried the ball 197 times for 866 yards and six touchdowns. Playing in 10 games, he was a major spark plug for the Northwestern offense.

This past season, he rushed for 230 yards and a touchdown in seven games. An important statistic to note is that he rushed for 2.9 yards per carry. This is the type of running back he is. He is not going to break off any big runs, but he will get into the dirty areas and make plays.

It is for that reason that I think he would be a great fit for Nebraska football. If Dedrick Mills leaves, Nebraska will have tremendous youth at the position. Although Nebraska football did not run a lot this year, what I saw from the running backs did not exactly instill confidence in me. I liked the way they played, but I thought they needed more time to develop.

Bowser would bring a veteran presence to Nebraska as well as give the current running backs on the roster development time. That is certainly important for the program moving forward. Bowser would not be a long-term answer obviously, but he would give Nebraska a very good bridge player for the future.

Scott Frost and the Nebraska football coaching staff would be wise to at least consider Bowser. This is going to be an offseason of tough decisions for the program, and I think this one is rather easy. Getting a running back who has plenty of experience and is already familiar with Big Ten football seems like a no-brainer to me.

I am all for letting the younger running backs play of course, but when talent is available, it’s important to try to obtain it.
