Nebraska Football: Scott Frost, Dedrick Mills praise 2021 RB Gabe Ervin
The newest Nebraska football running back is getting praised by many.
It’s no secret that running backs have been a recruiting focus for Nebraska football. It seems like they try to get a couple of running backs at least every class. The 2021 class is no exception, and Gabe Ervin is definitely a running back that generates a lot of buzz.

When you look at how he runs and his running style, he reminds me of Dedrick Mills a little bit. When I wrote about him back in June, I noted that he was a workhorse and that he was a very physical running back. These are all qualities that should suit him well for Nebraska football, and in that sense, he will replace Mills.
As early signing day begins to come to a close, the media was able to get a sense of what players and head coach Scott Frost thought about him.
Me personally, I really like what he brings to the table. He can find holes with ease, and once he finds them, he shoots through them. That is certainly something that is going to suit him well in big-time football.
In a feature on Husker247, Dedrick Mills was asked to give his thoughts on Ervin. It was interesting to hear what Mills had to say, as his description of Ervin reminded me a lot of the way Mills plays.
"“He’s just a kid that’s hard to take down right now when I watch him. He’s got good balance, good vision, good hands from what I see … And he’s got a nice little stiff-arm that I like to see. He’s very patient."
It seems like the consensus is that Ervin has a bulldozing style. That’s the first thing I noticed about him, and it’s interesting that is the first thing that Mills noticed as well. Ervin has a rare combination of speed and physicality, and that will serve him well.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Scott Frost also liked what Ervin brought to the table.
"Frost said they liked Gabe Ervin because he can do everything you ask out of the running back position. “His senior tape was really good. His junior tape was really good, but his senior tape I was super impressed with.” Thinks he’s going to fit in great with the other young backs."
Time will tell if will be able to fit with the other running backs, but I don’t see why he wouldn’t. He has many of the same qualities that. Nebraska running backs have. He offers a variety of skill sets, and that is something Nebraska needs to continue to recruit at the running back position.
In what has been a successful early signing day, Ervin is certainly a player that should be a big part of the Nebraska football offense. I’ll be interested to see what his role is for the future, as a new era of football is about to begin.
