Nebraska basketball has a catalyst on their hands.
As Nebraska basketball gets to revel in their victory over South Dakota, I I have a bold proclamation to make myself. Trey McGowens is the best player on the Nebraska basketball roster.
McGowens can do a little bit of everything. He can drive to the paint, he can shoot. He can make layups while taking on contact, he can get to the free throw line. He can truly do it all and it’s great to see. The fact that he has such good touch around the rim is rather impressive. Not only does he have touch around the rim, but he can make shots.

Just take Tuesday’s performance for example. He scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds in 30 minutes of play. he went three-of-nine from the field and one-of-four from beyond the arc. Those aren’t great statistics. However, he made his money at the free-throw line. He went six-of-seven on the evening. In addition, he also performed fairly well on the glass, recording six rebounds.
This is now three times in the last four games that he has scored in double figures. In his last time out, he scored 19 points against North Dakota State. Prior to that, he scored 12 points against McNeese State in the opener.
Gallons is showing that he can be a bucket-producer. Anytime the ball is in his hands, he makes things happen with it. Whether it is making the tough layup were getting to the free-throw line, he is practically a walking bucket. This is not to take anything away from Teddy Allen’s performance on Tuesday. He had 23 points, including an electric second half.
However, there is no denying that McGowan’s had a great game, and he is continuing to have good games with consistency. I really like how aggressively he plays, and I really like how he is able to drive to the bucket with purpose and relative ease.
I’m hoping he can continue this level of play, as he gives Nebraska basketball a bona fide scorer. He is so fun to watch, and he reminds me a little bit of James Palmer Jr. Here’s to hoping that he can make an even bigger impact. So far, he is making quite a good first impression.
