Mayen has proved to be a spark plug for Nebraska basketball.

You have heard me talk at length about several of Nebraska basketball’s top players. Names like Teddy Allen and Trey McGowens come to mind. However, there is another player that has been impressing me, one that has flown under the radar a bit.

Lat Mayen would be that guy. The TCU transfer played in 17 games for the Horned Frogs last season, averaging 2.1 points in 7.9 minutes per game. He essentially came off the bench last season, and had a small role for the program. That is not the case with Nebraska basketball.

Instead, the forward has played a major role with the program. He has played 24.3 minutes per game in three games. Starting all of Nebraska’s games so far, he has averaged 10.7 points per game and five rebounds per game. He has been a major asset for the program, and a player that has been crucial to this point.

His best game so far this season came in the opener against McNeese State. In that contest, he scored 13 points on five-of-11 shooting. He also recorded six rebounds in 24 minutes of action. Right from the start of the season, he has been able to provide yet another spark for the program. He’s part of what makes this team so dangerous.

To be honest, I thought he was going to be more of a rebounder for the program given his size. I knew he was a good shooter, but I didn’t know how that would translate onto the court. It’s translated very well, and it’s given Nebraska basketball a bit of an edge over its opponents.

He has surprised me just because he has been able to score efficiently. In addition, he possesses a nice outside jumpshot that I didn’t expect from a player his size. Nevertheless, that’s something he needs to have for the modern game of basketball.

I’ll be interested to see what he does on Tuesday against South Dakota State. Nevertheless, he is impressing right now and playing at a high level. What he brings to the table is going to be extremely important when Nebraska basketball as conference play begins. It may be the difference between them going far in potential postseason play as opposed to staying home.
