Adrian Martinez has been helping Nebraska football in more ways than one.

There is little doubt that the Nebraska football offense got a spark from the likes of Luke McCaffrey. There is also little doubt that it must’ve been difficult for quarterback Adrian Martinez to watch it all unfold.

Just last week, he was starting against Northwestern. On Saturday? He watched from the sideline.

I’m sure many of you have seen the viral video of Martinez pumping up his teammates  in the locker room. It is safe to say I got chills watching that, and it just showed what a competitor he is.

Even on Saturday, it looked as though he was extremely happy on the sideline and was encouraging his teammates. It was great to see, and that’s exactly what you want from your captain. He was cheering and excited for McCaffrey as the game got underway, and it was great to see him active on the sidelines, and not pouting or being disappointed.

It’s safe to say throughout the entire year he has been doing and saying all the right things. Him and Luke have formed a bond of sorts, and the two have really been appreciative of their time together. If there has been any animosity regarding quarterback competition, it hasn’t shown publicly or in the media.

It’s been awesome to see Martinez encouraging McCaffrey, and seeming to handle all of this in stride. I’m sure it’s not easy for him to do so, and let’s face it,  he is a football player who likes to compete. I’m sure he would have loved to have been out there on Saturday.

Nevertheless, he is taking on the role of  captain in a different way. He has been encouraging his teammates, and not looking out for himself. Has been doing and saying all of the right things, and that’s exactly what you want your leader to do. I applaud him for it because honestly I don’t even know if I would be as gracious as he has been.

dark. Next. Three Huskers to watch on Saturday

It will be interesting to see what plays out on Saturday. Whatever happens, Adrian Martinez will undoubtedly be there front and center, and that is a great thing.
