McCaffrey gave Nebraska football a spark on Saturday.
With Nebraska football’s win over Penn State on Saturday afternoon, one thing became abundantly clear. Luke McCaffrey should be the starting quarterback for the Huskers moving forward.
Were McCaffrey’ statistics Heisman-worthy? No, they weren’t. However, things such as pave of the offense and the ability of the offense to get the ball down the field were noticeable. Among the highlights of the game was McCaffrey’s ability to get the ball to Wan’Dale Robinson. This was something that Adrian Martinez just could not do. Whether it was a result of opening the playbook, or Martinez’s vision on the field, Robinson did not received many looks in the first couple games. That all changed Saturday.

For his part, McCaffrey went 13-of-21 on the afternoon, throwing for a touchdown and an interception. Nebraska was able to make the most of his skill set by letting him run free on a couple of plays. That resulted in 13 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown. His rushing yards led the team
Aside from just statistical analysis and box scores, it was very clear that McCaffrey’s play energized the entire team. The offense was moving at the pace it was supposed to be moving, and the ability to get multiple players involved was noticeable. The offense did not come without its faults however.
In the third quarter in particular, things began to stall a little bit. Whether it was the playcalling of Scott Frost/McCaffrey just not getting the job done, The Nebraska football offense struggled a bit once Penn State begin to recognize what they were running.
However, McCaffrey and the offense managed to hold things together, and in the process secure a victory that was much-needed for the Nebraska football program. Did the victory come with growing pains for McCaffrey? Yes, it sure did. However, that’s part of the growing process for the quarterback. After all, he was making his first start.
McCaffrey should be the starter moving forward. Right now, he is getting the most out of the offense, and that is allowing for the Nebraska football program to do what they want to do offensively. Until further notice, McCaffrey should be under center. Right now, he gives the program the best chance to win football games.
