Nebraska football may see a bigger role for the younger wide receivers.

If you want more production from the Nebraska football wide receiver position, you may be in luck. Tuesday, coordinator Matt Lubick indicated that the freshmen would see more playing time.

The freshmen certainly made the most of their snaps while they were out there. Marcus Fleming for example caught five passes for 75 yards. Zavier Betts caught two passes for 17 yards. We also saw Omar Manning on the field, although he did not really make an impact. Still, it was good to see that Nebraska football trusted the younger wide receivers.

Personally, I would love to see all of the snap counts go up for the freshman. You have heard me talk all summer long about how dynamic these wide receivers are. They got to show a little bit of that on Saturday, although not nearly enough.

From the sounds of it, it seems as though the freshman will be able to get more opportunities. This is exactly what I want to see. Nebraska football needs to have their dynamic playmakers on the field, and if those are the freshman so be it. As long as they continue to get reps in practice and continue to make progress, that’s all I care about. This freshman class is extremely explosive, and they have the ability to make an instant impact.

From the sounds of it, Lubick indicates that the freshman will be able to get more involved. Nebraska football certainly needs to wake up the offense before it’s too late. The freshman may be able to provide an injection of energy, and that certainly what the Nebraska football offense needs.

"“Coaches, we worry about the basic fundamentals,” Lubick said. “Are we going to line up right? Are we going to run the right route? Are we going to block the right guy? And for the most part, they did that. Secondly, are we going to play with great effort? They did that too. So they did everything we asked of them. In fact, they probably superseded our expectations.“And so they’re going to continue to get more plays and more opportunities.”"

I’m excited to see if the freshman will be able to get more involved with the offense. They need to, bottom line. The freshman need to be able to show that they have something. Nebraska football needs to be able to have the younger guys make an impact before it’s too late.

I really liked what I saw on Saturday, and I’m hoping the Nebraska football offense can continue that against Penn State. The younger wide receivers need to start, it’s time. It’s not the answer to completely fix the offense, but it is a viable option in my estimation.
