Nebraska football was able to add depth at linebacker on Friday.

Friday, Nebraska football landed  a commitment from Northern Iowa graduate transfer Chris Kolarevic. He verbally committed to the huskers, after entering the transfer portal from the University of Northern Iowa.

Measuring in at six-foot-one, 230 pounds, Kolarevic was a major part of what the Panthers defense was all about. He was having a great season before the FCS shut down.

This is an intriguing commitment for Nebraska football we take a look at his eligibility. Kolarevic is immediately eligible, and should graduate from UNI in December. Because of the eligibility freeze by the NCAA, he will have two years of football remaining beginning in the 2021 season.

Kolarevic had a great year in 2018. He played in six games and totaled 65 tackles, in addition to a sack.

To me, this sounds like a solid linebacker get for Nebraska football. His size indicates that he is not a huge linebacker, and his play style indicates that he is fast.

Those traits are two things that coaches are looking for in linebackers. Speed and playmaking ability have now overtaken strength and size as he components for the position. Kolarevic should be able to make an impact in that regard.

I’ll be interested to see what he does. The Nebraska football linebacker position is extremely strong, and they added to it with his commitment on Friday. The linebacker position has not been one where Nebraska has been lacking talent. They have several strong linebackers on the roster. Adding a graduate transfer should add experience and depth to the position. Nebraska football could certainly use some more hard-hitters on defense, and Kolarevic provides that.

It will be interesting to see exactly what his role is for this football program moving forward. I see him as more of a depth piece, but that’s not taking anything away from him. Nebraska needs depth and talented at the linebacker position, and It looks like he can provide that. I’ll be interested to see exactly how he can fill his role, and I think this is a great pickup or Nebraska. It only makes the linebacker position that much stronger.
