Could Nebraska football make a bowl game this year?

Could Nebraska football get back to a bowl game after all? According to a tweet from Brett McMurphy, there will be no win requirements to play in a bowl this season.

First, this has to be approved by the NCAA’s counsel. If it does get approved, this could be an interesting situation for not only college football, but the Nebraska football program as well.

Nebraska has not appeared in a bowl game since 2015. Something like this could allow them to get back to postseason play. Sure, it would be unorthodox but I would be in favor of it. Particularly if Nebraska football has trouble with this schedule, I could definitely see them accepting a bowl invite and playing.

People underestimate how much a bowl game could help the program. For starters, this allows the team to have extra practices with each other. This helps the program develop, and allows players to experience potential growth that they could use their to their advantage the following season.

Secondly, it’s good for recruiting. It always looks better when a program has gone to a bowl game recently. Granted, this year’s bowl game prestige may be watered down a bit. However, it still is postseason play. If Nebraska football manages to have a good record this season, that on top of appearing in a bowl game could do wonders for recruiting.

Me personally, I  love to see Nebraska football back in a game that matters. We have been shooting for bowl games every season since Scott Frost has been here. Getting a bowl game would be a feather in his cap for sure. It would be great for the seniors, and it would be good for the younger players too. It’s participating in something meaningful.

Although I am not usually a fan of letting everybody get a trophy per se, there definitely needs to be an exception made this year. I’ll be interested to see what the criteria is for appearing in a game, and what it would take for Nebraska to get in one. With the schedule that they have, every win is going to mean something. Hopefully, Nebraska will be in a position where they can play in one at the end of the year.
