Nebraska football is looking to get a big-name safety for 2022.

Nebraska football has been in contact with a four-star recruit. 2022 safety Xavier Nwankpa has been talking to Nebraska frequently, according to a report from Bryan Munson of HuskerOnline.com.

Nwankpa is the ninth overall safety in the 2022 class, and the second overall player in his class from the state of Iowa per the 247Sports Composite rankings. In addition to Nebraska, he also has offers from Iowa, Iowa State, Missouri, Florida, and Florida Atlantic. Most recently, he was offered by Princeton on September 12.

Playing for Southeast Oak High School, he recorded 52.5 tackles and three interceptions in the 2019 season. His aggressiveness and willingness to go after the football makes him a coach’s dream.

What could he bring to Nebraska football? He is an extremely fast safety, who can read a play brilliantly. When I watched some of his highlights, he was able to recognize the play, and then come over and make it. Measuring in at six-foot-two, 175 pounds, he is a triple threat in the sense that he can defend the run and the pass as well as control the middle of the field.

He would immediately help Nebraska football and make the quarterbacks of the Big Ten think before they throw

Currently, Nebraska football has no commitments in the 2022 class, so it’s good to see them actively trying to fill it. I love how they are going for the big recruits and not some of the smaller ones. Don’t get me wrong, small-type recruits are crucial to success for the program. It’s always good to have a bunch of three-star recruits. However, Nebraska football needs to start landing some big-time names.

Nwankpa would certainly fall into that category. Lately, we have seen several Nebraska football classes land big names. This is what Nebraska is going to need to do in order to compete with the rest of the Big Ten conference. Landing big-time recruits will only make their lives that much easier. Hopefully, that will translate into winning ballgames.
