Nebraska baseball is continuing to recruit at a high level.

Nebraska baseball continued their solid work in recruiting earlier this week, as they landed 2021 Millard South baseball pitcher and first baseman Matthew Guthmiller.

Measuring in at six-foot-one, 190 pounds, he will look  to play both first base and pitch for Nebraska next year. As a report from Michael Bruntz of 247Sports notes, Guthmiller has an interesting repertoire. He has a changeup, slider, and curveball. It seems as though his two-seam fastball need some work. Right now,  it clocks in at about the mid—80s.

If the name sounds familiar, Gus Miller’s dad caught for Nebraska in the mid—90s.  You could say, this is a bit of a family affair. He is the eighth in-state prospect for the Nebraska  baseball 2021 class. There is certainly a theme of local talent coming to Nebraska. Not only is a local talent, but it’s good, local talent. that certainly matters in the grand scheme of Big Ten baseball.

So far, I am extremely impressed with what Nebraska baseball has managed to do with the 2021 recruiting class. There is talent there, as well as an abundance of pitching. Nebraska struggled on the mound last year, so this is probably a good thing. I’ll be interested to see what Guthmiller  can do. If he can get his fastball up to at least the low-90s, that would definitely work in his favor.

It seems today that every single pitcher is a bit of a flamethrower. Now, you need to be able to have a dominant fastball in addition to secondary pitches.  I could see  his triple threat of a slider, fastball, and curve as a truly lethal combination. It will be interesting to watch his development over the next couple of months.

In any event, Nebraska is continuing to build strong classes. It is evident that head coach Will Bolt wants to recruit the state of Nebraska, and why not? Nebraska is not just a football school. Nebraska baseball has served as a beacon of pride for the school as well.

They are only one season removed from making a big run in the Big Ten tournament. I certainly think they can get back there in due time.

Bolt is picking up pieces to make this team successful. Now, we’ll have to see how it all translates on the field. Nebraska baseball certainly has the talent to get the job done. Now, it’s all about the execution.
