The newest Nebraska football commitment explained his decision to commit .

In case you hadn’t heard, Nebraska football landed a big commitment on Friday night. 2021 three-star linebacker Mikai Gbayor committed to the program. On Friday, he gave a little bit of an explanation as to why he committed.

Personally, I think he will fit the Nebraska football defensive scheme very well. He is aggressive, and quick at reacting. In addition, he shows good pursuit to the football and can tackle well. Those are all things that Nebraska football is going to need in a linebacker moving forward.

As noted in a report by Brian Dohn of 247Sports, Gbayor likes linebackers coach Mike Dawson and the style in which Nebraska plays defense. For how he plays, this Nebraska defense may be a good fit. The linebackers have always been aggressive, and they always fly to the football. That’s exactly what Gbayor does.

Statistics don’t tell the whole story, but they do tell some of it. He recorded 88 tackles and 12 sacks during his junior season at Irvington High last year. He flew all over the field and was a game-changer defensively.

Moving forward, I truly believe that the skills Gbayor has are going to be something the program looks for in linebackers. We have already seen how they want to bring in skill guys who can do more than just stop the run. Now, it’s all about getting them to stay.

In the meantime, Gbayor liked how aggressively the linebackers play in the Nebraska defense. I expect him to be a major part of the group moving forward.

"“Their defense is pretty cool,” Gbayor said. “I’ve been watching film on those guys. The way they send their linebackers on blitzes, and the way their have their defensive tackles make way for their linebackers to make play, it’s pretty cool. Their defense is pretty cool.”"

I’ll be interested to see how he fits, and at first glance I think he will fit nicely. I could see him doing really well in certain blitz packages, and I can also see him definitely filling a pass-rusher role for Nebraska.

Pass-rushing was something that Nebraska football did not do well last year. It’s good to see that they have been trying to address that for future classes. With the way Gbayor plays, this could be a very good match.

Nebraska football has been insistent on getting playmakers, and they did that on Friday. From Gbayor’s comments, I have a feeling that he will be able to succeed in a big way.
