Nebraska basketball could be playing in a bubble next year.

With the Nebraska football season not happening as of now, the focus shifts to college basketball. As it relates to Nebraska, the program is set to roll out a new-look roster in 2020-2021. As shown by the NBA and WNBA, bubble basketball can happen.

If you watched any basketball since the restart, there has been quality play in addition to player safety. Unlike a football team that has 90 players on it, basketball can be controlled in a bubble. This is why a college basketball season could be feasible.

The NCAA seems very confident that a season can happen. It would be great to have a college basketball season, and that would certainly give Nebraska fans something to do it without football.

Granted, it probably won’t have the same level of excitement as a Nebraska footballSaturday. Nevertheless, it will fill the void and at this point that’s all we should be asking for.

A report from Chris Basnett of the Lincoln Journal Star notes that Big Ten athletic directors are trying to find ways to play this season.  NCAA senior vice president for basketball Dan Gavitt also hopes to have a season as well.

With Gavitt’s comments to the media earlier this week, he’s made it clear that the NCAA is trying to find ways to make it happen. In my view, it sounds like they plan to push forward as they try to find the best situation possible for everybody involved.

"“We recognize what’s going on around the country and we’ve been making plans and contingencies for a change if necessary. But we’re also, as we’ve said all through the summer, trying to exercise patience; make sure we learn as much as we can from all the other sports that are out happening right now, notably the NBA and the WNBA in our sport, and the success they are having,” said NCAA senior vice president for basketball Dan Gavitt in an interview released by the NCAA.“We remain very confident that we’re going to have a college basketball season, albeit different, and maybe altered as necessary by the virus. Then leading into March Madness, very confident that’s going to happen.”"

I’ll be honest, for some it may sound like a blanket statement and a statement that was thought out and typed with no real honesty to it. However, I certainly appreciate the words from Gavitt. It doesn’t sound like he is blowing off Nebraska basketball fans, and college basketball fans overall.

What I take from his words is that the NCAA wants to play. It may look a little bit different than what we are accustomed to, but that would just fit right in with the crazy year that has been 2020.

It will be interesting to see if college basketball can pull this off. My guess is that they are going to try their best, and Gavitt’s words reaffirm that. At the end of the day, that’s all I ask. It would be great to cover basketball in the fall, and see if Coach Hoiberg and his staff can make a leap in Year Two.
