Nash Hutmacher’s hardworking, “blue collar” mindset getting noticed
When you take a look at the Nebraska football defense, there are several players that should be able to make an impact in short order. You have heard me talk ad nauseum about the youth movement that the Nebraska defense has positioned themselves to be in. Nash Hutmacher is certainly one of those guys.
Hutmacher can do a little bit of it all. In high school, he was a three-sport athlete. He was a three-time all-state football player and a three-time state champion in wrestling. His “least successful” sport was track and field. He was “only” a two-time state champion in track and field.

He was an absolute monster on the high school gridiron as he recorded nearly 300 career tackles. Sometimes, senior year is when certain players take it easy and just pad their stats, knowing they have collegiate offers and waiting in the wings. For Hutmacher, that was not the case. He played at a high level throughout the entire year. He recorded 88 tackles, and for sacks.
In what may seem like a bit of an oddity, those numbers were actually down from what he recorded his junior year. Recording 105 tackles, 10 sacks, 10 forced fumbles, and for fumble recoveries he absolutely lit up the gridiron.
Now, he brings the same tough football pedigree to Lincoln. Measuring in at six-foot-five, 300 pounds, he has been given the nickname “The Polar Bear.” He is truly a massive talent, and he should be able to be a fixture on the defensive line in no time.
Earlier this week, defensive line coach Tony Tuioti saying Hutmacher’s praises. Honestly, I think the defensive lineman is worthy of it. When you take a look at the strength he brings to the table, it’s truly impressive. For what it’s worth, it seems like the entire team is really working hard in the weight room. So far, Tuioti likes what he sees.
"“Nash is as blue collar as it gets,” Tuioti said. “He’s great here, the guys love him. I don’t know if we have enough weight for him to lift. By the time he leaves, he’s going to be the strongest guy we’ve ever had here.”"
I’ll be interested to see how Hutmacher’s career progresses. If what he’s done to get to this point is any indication, he should be in good shape moving forward.
