For Nebraska football, it’s all about leadership.

Friday, Nebraska football head coach Scott Frost conducted an interview with former Marine special forces commander Eric Kapitulik, who runs The Program.

The Program is a leadership group that the Nebraska football team has worked with for the past two summers. Obviously, things will be a little bit different this year. Nevertheless, both Frost and  Kapitulik were able to conduct an interview.

One of the topics during the call was leadership. Frost’s answer to a question regarding leadership intrigued me. It gave me insight into the type of philosophy he is trying to use with his team. As Nebraska football gets set (maybe) to embark on the 2020 season, leadership is going to be extremely important. Nebraska certainly has a tough schedule this year, and it will be up to the upperclassman in particular to help get the job done.

From the time he was hired, I always thought that there was a method to how Frost did things. Let’s be honest, the results have not always been there. Nevertheless, I see a blueprint for success. For Frost, it seems like it all starts with leadership. It’s something that he tries to get across to his players, and it seems like a principle that he really tries to mold his teams around.

Personally, I have always been a big fan of players policing themselves on the field. The leadership maybe has not been there over the past couple of seasons, and it was a problem last year. Hopefully, things will work out better for Nebraska in that regard next season.  as for now, leadership and perseverance will be key for Nebraska in 2020.

"“It’s so easy to quit nowadays. We have a blink society, a short attention span society and we’re all guilty of it,” he said. “If things aren’t going our way, we just throw up our hands and go do something else or hit the reset button. … I want to instill in our guys the desire to be great at something. To matter in this world. To be a person that matters, and the only way to do that is through hard work, deciding what you want to be good at and not taking no for an answer and working as hard as you have to to make your mark and be the type of person who makes a difference.”"

It was interesting that Frost said that, as it gave a blueprint to how he runs his teams. Of course, things don’t always go according to plan on the field. However, it’s becoming apparent that Scott Frost-led teams will be ones that will always work hard. Although that may not always translate to wins on the field, that certainly counts for something.

Frost certainly has a lot of work ahead of him. Right now, it seems like he is taking everything in stride. In situations like the one we are in right now, that’s really all you can do.
