Nebraska football is in the mix for a high-motor edge defender.

On Friday, Nebraska football made the final five list for three-star defensive end Jonathan Jones.

The 2021 recruit is the 52nd overall strong-side defensive end in his class, and the 108th overall player in his class from the state of Texas per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Given that Texas is rich with talent, I wouldn’t necessarily consider 108th to be extremely low.

In addition to Nebraska, Baylor, Colorado, Texas, and Missouri are also a part of his list.

He had a stellar season for McKinney High School in 2019. Recording 55 tackles, he also tallied six sacks and four pass breakups. There is no doubt he can get after the quarterback.

When I watch his highlights, I see a player that is very physical as soon as the ball is snapped. He isn’t necessarily going to beat you with speed in terms of getting into the backfield. He is however going to out-muscle his man physically. He extends his arms, and uses his leverage to push back his lineman. He also manages to put his hands up as soon as the ball is thrown. He is extremely active in trying to disrupt a play.

In terms of how he would fit into the Nebraska football defense, I could see him as a better run defender. That is not to say he is a bad pass-rusher. Run defense is more of his strong suit. He has a high motor and does not give up on a play. that quality right there will give him a lot of playing time on Saturdays.

In terms of the Nebraska 2021 recruiting class, things are okay at the moment. They had   decommitment of Chris Paul Jr. on Thursday. Nevertheless, the class still shakes out nicely. It ranks 46th  nationally, and 10th overall in the Big Ten per the 247Sports Team Rankings . There are a bunch of talented athletes in this class, and I suspect that the rankings will only continue to improve from here on out.

A commitment from Jones would certainly make things better for Nebraska. He could be another big piece in their commitment to the defensive side of the ball. He would give them an edge defender that they have been missing for quite some time. Hopefully, Nebraska will be able to seal the deal and keep the good momentum  aplenty heading into (hopefully) the 2020 football season.
