Nebraska Football wants to use the tight ends more.

All throughout this offseason, you have heard me talk about the tight end position for Nebraska football. It’s a position worth talking about, as the program did not get a ton of production from it last year. However, it appears that Nebraska may have a plan on how to utilize the tight ends.

According to a report from Nate Clouse of HuskerOnline.com, Nebraska wants to use the tight ends on third down and in the red zone.

At first glance, that may not sound like they will be getting a ton of opportunities. However, consider the Nebraska football offense. Nebraska has several playmakers on the outside that they can use in terms of getting the ball to the red zone. The dynamic duo of Omar Manning and Zavier Betts comes to mind Alante Brown fits into the equation as well. They will definitely be able to help in the passing game.

At running back, you have players such as Wan’Dale Robinson, Dedrick Mills, Marvin Scott III, and Henry Gray. They should definitely figure into the equation as well.

All of the players mentioned above can get Nebraska into the red zone. Last year,  Nebraska football ranked 105th in the country in red zone percentage. They scored touchdowns at a 75.76% clip in the red zone. That is certainly not the best number, and could be improved upon.

It makes sense then that they would want to use their tight ends to improve red zone efficiency. As tight end coach Sean Beckton told Clouse earlier in the week,  everyone knows that the tight end position has to be better in the red zone. Now, it’s all about fixing it.

"“You get what you work on so there’s some situations on some practices where Coach Frost has kind of grown in his development. He knows that those areas we’re weak in. So he’s going to spend some days just working on red zone, some days we’re working on third down execution. So those are some of the things that we saw that we need to change our approach so obviously the tight ends we’re going to do some things there to try to get those guys the ball in the red zone.”"

If for Nebraska football could get the position to be a red zone threat, that would be crucial. Having the tight ends be a focal point in the red zone takes the pressure off the outside receivers. Furthermore, it gives the quarterback another section of the field that he can throw to.

Next. Media hype is beginning once again. dark

Especially with touchdowns at stake, having unlimited options is certainly imperative to success. It would be awesome to see the tight ends play a big role in winning games.
