The Nebraska football star is still missing in action.

Sometimes, no news is decent news, and that’s the case with Nebraska football wide receiver JD Spielman. According to a report from Sean Callahan of Rivals.com, Spielman will not be with the Huskers for their unorganized workouts.

Head coach Scott Frost noted that Spielman’s status was “unchanged.” As some of you may recall, he left the team back in March due to some personal issues. However he has appeared in recent days working out with former Nebraska coach Keith Williams. He has not been in contact with any of the Nebraska football coaching staff.

I am miffed in regards to his status with the team. Yes, his status for right now is that he is not going to be in Lincoln. However, what will that mean for next season? Is he giving up on the team entirely, or is his leave of absence going to stretch out until late July, early August?

This is honestly one of the more interesting situations that I have seen recently. There hasn’t been a set date for when he is going to return, there hasn’t really been any news in regards to whether he will return or not, and he hasn’t had any contact with the Nebraska football coaching staff.

Obviously, I would like him back. He figures to be a huge part of the passing attack next season. Nebraska football has a lot of depth at wide receiver, but they do not have a lot of experience. Spielman would fill that void.  He would undoubtedly be a top playmaker for the Nebraska football offense next year. With the schedule they have, there are going to need him at wideout.

Initially, I thought Spielman would be back with the program by now. I’m certainly not faulting him for leaving. Obviously, he has some issues that he needs to work out. I would rather he worked them out at home than struggle in Lincoln. However, the fact that there’s not a set return date or any indication that he is coming back is a little worrisome from a football perspective.

One has to wonder if he is coming back at all. For the record, I I would be intrigued if he came back just due to the fact that he hasn’t been in contact with Nebraska recently. With the season slated to begin in a couple of months, a return now would definitely be a curious one to say the least. Hopefully, we’ll see Spielman on the field sooner rather than later. I certainly hope for a positive outcome, whatever it may be.
