Nebraska football made two new hires on Monday.

Nebraska football is continuing to add to its coaching staff. According to a report from the Lincoln Journal Star, they have added NFL assistant Bill McGovern and college assistant Bobby Maffei as defensive analysts.

McGovern spent the 2016-2019 seasons with the New York Giants. There, he worked with former Nebraska football coach Mike Dawson. Prior to that, he worked with Dawson when the two helped coach the Philadelphia Eagles.

Maffei has connections to Nebraska. He graduated from Lincoln in 2011. He worked at Baylor and Temple with Matt Rhule, who is now the Carolina Panthers head coach.

The hiring of these two is very interesting to me, but in a good way. It seems like Nebraska has hired a bunch of analysts this offseason. Especially defensively, these two can definitely help. The Nebraska football defense had a ton of problems last season, and if they can help Erik Chinander figure out the best spots to put players, then that is certainly welcome.

I am particularly enthused about the addition of McGovern. I recognize his name from when he worked at Boston College. He was always a hard-working member of the coaching staff. He was also highly respected at Chestnut Hill. Having his experience within the program is certainly going to benefit the team.

Having Maffei as a younger voice is great too. The fact that he graduated from Lincoln means that he knows what the Nebraska football tradition is all about. He knows how much winning means to not only the program but the state of Nebraska. In my estimation, Matt Rhule was a very good college coach who should look to leave his mark with Carolina. Having someone who worked with him on the coaching staff can only mean good things.

The fact that the Nebraska football program is taking a more analytical approach to things means that they are paying closer attention to the details. That was something that I thought was missing last year. Little things kept happening game after game that could have been easily corrected. Now, with the addition of these two on the staff, it will bring more voices to the table. In this case, that’s not a bad thing.

We have seen with the last couple of hires that Nebraska wants to get as many experienced coaches in here as possible. Not only do they have experience, they have had success. Establishing a culture of success is going to be paramount for Nebraska going forward.

I’ll be interested to see exactly how their coaching styles shine through as analysts. The program would certainly be smart to take the advice of these two moving forward.
