The Nebraska football secondary is coming together.

We have talked about the veterans on the Nebraska football defense. However, we haven’t heard much about the younger guys. However, they should be able to make an impact very soon.

All in all, it seems like Nebraska football is trying to build the secondary as a cohesive unit. You could definitely sense the cohesiveness of the unit was more prevalent than the year before. The secondary was one of the few bright spots of the defense in most games. Yes, they struggled in some games, they are human. However, you could tell that they were playing together as a unit and for each other.

More from Husker Corner

In a report written by Brian Christopherson of 247Sports, he talks about the cohesiveness that this edition of the cornerback unit is trying to build. There are several veterans on the unit, most notably DiCaprio Bootle and Cam Taylor-Britt.

However, there are also some young guys that are trying to make their mark. In particular, Tamon Lynum, Jaden Francois, and Henry Gray are set to be the future at the position for Nebraska football. The secondary was a positional unit that the Huskers focused on quite a bit in the 2020 recruiting class. Now, it’s all about developing those players.

Much of the credit in recruiting for the secondary goes to Travis Fisher. He recruited the state of Florida hard, and hopefully it will pay off. I am particularly excited to see what Gray and Francois will do for the program. In watching their highlight tapes, they are both tough and physical. Hopefully, that energy will reverberate around the rest of the secondary. In the meantime, Taylor-Britt told Christopherson that he is beginning to see the unit come together.

"“I see a lot of potential. You can give (Tamon Lynum) his credit,” Taylor-Britt said. “He’s come out here during the workouts. He was giving it his all. Also, Jaiden Francois and Henry Gray, as well with his encouragement. He likes to boost them up, give them credit for the things that they do.”“I believe, to me, just because I am in a [defensive back] group, we’re the best groups in all,” he said. “We’re so together. We’re always together. We say something, the team responds positively. It’s never negative. They listen to it and take that and run with it.”"

I love the energy that Taylor-Britt brings to the table. This is a crucial year not only for the secondary, but for the entire program. Hopefully, the secondary will be able to play a big part in games this season. The loss of Lamar Jackson will undoubtedly hurt. However, there has to be a next-man-up mentality for Nebraska football. They do not have any easy opponents this year. it sounds cliché, but the schedule will separate the boys from the men.
