A pair of Nebraska football alums are headed to the show.

Last year, no Nebraska football players were drafted. This year, two Nebraska football players were drafted. After playing for the same program, the Davis brothers will now be going to the National Football League together as well. Carlos is headed to Pittsburgh, while Khalil is off to Tampa Bay.

Khalil was drafted in the sixth round, while Carlos was drafted in the seventh round. I loved watching them play as  members of  the Nebraska program. They were very versatile in the sense that they were able to both stop the run and rush the passer.

Khalil will be joining several former Nebraska football alums. Ndamukong Suh and Lavonte David both currently play for Tampa Bay while inside linebackers coach Barrett Ruud was drafted by the Buccaneers in 2005. If anything, the organization is extremely familiar with Nebraska football. Khalil recorded 44 tackles and eight sacks last season in what was the best campaign of his Nebraska football career.

Carlos will join a Steelers team that has always prided itself on defense. Carlos was a guy that did a little bit of everything at Nebraska. In his career, he recorded 125 tackles, 9.5 sacks, and 11 quarterback hurries. He will fit the aggressive mold that the team wants to build. The Steelers seem like the perfect fit for a guy that plays hard, and plays physically.

The Davis brothers are the 11th pair of Nebraska football brothers to be selected in the draft. Apparently, Nebraska really does run in the family. I am excited for these two. In what was a difficult Nebraska football season last year, they often were a bright spot. They held down a defense that struggled at times.

The Nebraska program is certainly in the stages of rebuilding. However, having two draft picks this weekend is certainly a positive to take away from all of this. With the type of talent that Nebraska football head coach Scott Frost has currently on the roster, I definitely can see more draft picks representing Nebraska in the coming years.

It’s all about player development and putting players in the best positions to succeed. I truly believe that Frost and his coaching staff can do both. It all starts with a winning culture, and that is certainly something Nebraska is trying to build.

Congratulations to the Davis brothers! They worked extremely hard for this opportunity and now, they get a chance to live out their dream.
