Nebraska basketball will be undergoing their second overall under The Mayor.

I hate to sound overdramatic when I talk about these things but Wednesday truly is a new era for Nebraska basketball.

Five newcomers will be added to the roster. However, these aren’t your average, ordinary newcomers. They are players with a ton of talent who have come from different places in college basketball.

Teddy Allen, Lat Mayen, Kobe King, Kobe Webster, and Trey McGowens  are all set to sign with Nebraska basketball on Wednesday. Much like last year, Fred Hoiberg will look to overhaul a program before the start of the following season. However, I’m certainly more confident in this year’s overhaul.

This group will be able to produce immediate results. Both Teddy Allen and Mayen are immediately eligible, while King is applying for a waiver to become immediately eligible as well. We have all seen what Allen can do, as he was a prolific player at the high school level. Mayen also has big-time college basketball experience, which will definitely help a program looking to close the gap between them and everybody else.

I am most excited for King to be frank with you. King has already played Big Ten basketball, which is a huge asset in my eyes. As noted before, Allen and Mayen have played big-time college basketball too, let’s not forget that. However, the Big Ten Conference is an entirely different animal for basketball. King knows what it’s like to play in-conference games that are difficult to win night in and night out. There are no easy games in the Big Ten. King’s experience there will help Nebraska basketball considerably.

Hoiberg has done a masterful job of building the program with these last two classes. He probably couldn’t have predicted the final outcome of his first group last year. Here’s to hoping that his second group will be a little bit better in terms of staying in Lincoln.

One thing is for sure: A new era of Nebraska basketball is upon us. I’m certainly excited for it and I’ll be interested to see how the pieces fit. There are a ton of scorers in this group, there is size in this group, and there are playmakers in this group. These five have it all when it comes to basketball talent. I’m excited for them to officially begin their Nebraska careers on Wednesday. It’s not like we’ll have to see them all at once either, we will have time to enjoy their contributions for several years.
