This was a big get for Nebraska Basketball.

Nebraska basketball continues to reshape their roster, and Saturday, they received a commitment from shooting guard Trey McGowens. The former Pittsburgh Panther entered the transfer portal back in March.

As a prospect, he was a four-star recruit. He was the 95th overall player in the 2019 class, the 10th overall combo guard, and the fifth overall player in his class from the state of Virginia per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

When you take a look at what he can bring to the table for Nebraska basketball, he brings consistency. The last two seasons, he has played in 33 games, starting 32 of them. He averaged 11.5 points per contest last season after averaging 11.6 points the year prior. He has also proven to be extremely durable over the last two years, playing over 25 minutes in 2018-19 and 33.6 minutes per game last year.

He will have to sit out a one-year for becoming eligible. After that, he will have two years of eligibility remaining.

McGowens will reunite with Shamiel Stevenson. As you may recall, Stevenson was a transfer to the program last season.

When you take a look at how this Nebraska roster is constructed, they are again rebuilding on the fly. Nevertheless, they are bringing in some quality players. Friday night, I suggested that there may be a big man on the way, and that there would be two scholarships open  to land one.

Now that number has trimmed down to one. I honestly didn’t expect Nebraska to fill those two spots until later in the month. However, they pounced on McGowens quickly all things considered.

Given the fact that he will have to sit out a year, he won’t necessarily bring an immediate impact in the sense that he will play right away. However, he should make an immediate impact once he steps on the court. He has tremendous durability and playmaking ability. This is exactly what a Nebraska basketball point guard needs to have in a Fred Hoiberg-led offense. He needs his guards to be able to step up and control the offense. McGowens should be able to do that.

It’s kind of unfortunate that Nebraska basketball has to go through this sort of mini-rebuild. However, I am confident in the direction that the Nebraska basketball program is heading. They certainly are focused on getting impact players to play on the floor. They certainly need those types of players to be competitive in the Big Ten.
