Nebraska Football has capable playmakers for 2020.

With the graduation of Nebraska football cornerback Lamar Jackson, that is undoubtedly a big loss for the program. However, the defensive backfield is still a source of strength for Nebraska. Fortunately, the program stocked up on defensive players over the past couple of recruiting classes. The gains made in the recruiting classes are undoubtedly a positive development. However, there will be three veterans in particular that should be able to help offset the loss of Jackson’s departure.

Seniors Marquel Dismuke and DiCaprio Bootle, along with junior Cam Taylor-Britt should be able to hold the secondary down. Dismuke recorded 42 tackles and four pass deflections last season. Bootle had 17 tackles and six pass deflections last season. In what was an injury plagued-season, Taylor-Britt still performed reasonably well. He recorded 29 tackles, four forced fumbles, three interceptions, and three pass deflections. He was a crucial part of the Nebraska football defense before his injury. He will have the chance to make up for lost time here.

Looking at those three names, I feel confident in what the Nebraska football secondary can do for next season. Dismuke and Bootle in particular will have to play strong football. Britt has the ability to move around a bit defensively. Last spring, we talked about how Britt brought versatility to the table. He will have to bring that versatility to the defense yet again. It’s important to note however, that Nebraska football has a lot more depth on defense.

Myles Farmer, Quinton Clark, and Braxton Newsome are just some of the names that could help step up defensively. It’s also important to remember that the defensive depth isn’t limited to the secondary. There are a ton of pieces this year that could help Nebraska football make an impact. There are a lot more options on the table then there has been in previous seasons.

The trio mentioned above should help lead the charge for next season.  I would feel very confident in them. They have the experience and talent to lead a unit that is going to be heavily counted on  in the 2020 season. Particularly with the first half of the schedule, Nebraska is going to need to do everything they can to stay in these games and give the offense a chance to put up some points.

Of course, that is easier said than done, but Nebraska should be in a much better spot defensively than they were a year ago.
