The senior will miss the rest of the season for Nebraska basketball.

I hate reporting stories like this, however they are a fact of life. Senior guard Matej Kavas is going to miss the rest of the season for Nebraska basketball with a broken hand.

Kavas couldn’t quite find the magic that he had at Seattle in his first season with Nebraska. He averaged just 5.3 points and.1.2 rebounds per game. He made 33% of his three-point shots. He had been out of the lineup in three straight games, a decision made by Coach Hoiberg.

He was starting to see more playing time however, and that was certainly encouraging. He played 21 minutes against Iowa and recorded 11 points when Nebraska took on Maryland.

I hate to see his season end like this. I definitely liked the way he played the game. I thought he was a great fit to today’s edition of basketball. He always shot the ball with no hesitation and was decisive in his shots. That is something I always enjoyed when watching him. In particular, he loved to take shots from the corner.

Now, he will be cheering on Nebraska from the bench. Although it may be tough, he could certainly put a positive spin on this. With such a young team, he could still be a valuable part of teaching the younger guys how to play In tough situations. Especially with the Big Ten tournament coming up, he will definitely need to share his advice with the rest of the team.

I credit Hoiberg for taking a flyer on him. He was a very good player with Seattle. Furthermore, his standing as a senior definitely provided stability for the program. I wish him the best of luck in whatever his future endeavors are.

It’s tough when a player has to end his basketball career abruptly, but now he can get started on his next chapter in life. I wish him nothing but the best moving forward.
