Nebraska football will be down a wide receiver.

Darien Chase will no longer be part of the Nebraska football program. Friday, he announced he was transferring from the program via Twitter.

Chase did not see the field a ton last season. He played in four games, but still managed to preserve his redshirt. He had one catch for four yards on the year.

This decision was made to move closer to his family. The former four-star recruit will enter the transfer portal immediately. According to a report from the Omaha World-Herald, Chase said the decision was very difficult because it had nothing to do with the state of the football program.

This is certainly disappointing news, but it’s not a reflection on Chase. He obviously wants to be closer to his family and is dealing with some other issues right now. If anything, I want him to be able to feel comfortable and get better. If going closer to home makes his college football career flourish, then that’s definitely something he needs to do.

I certainly would have liked to see him on the field. He has tremendous speed, and hands. Whoever lands him out of the transfer portal will get a talented receiver with playmaking ability. Measuring in at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, Chase is the perfect size for a speedy receiver.

Luckily, his departure does not affect the wide receiving unit for Nebraska football too much. They already have a ton of talented receivers. Currently, they have 10 scholarship receivers on the roster. Now, it will be up to the others to step up. Who knows, this may leave room for a freshman to come in and make an impact early. Whatever the case may be, this is a situation where both parties have a chance to start fresh.

I certainly wish the best for Chase, and I’m hoping that he can continue his college football career. Sometimes, these things are bigger than football.
