The former Nebraska football coach is off to the NFL.

For those who have not heard by now, former Nebraska football coach Troy Walters is headed to Cincinnati. He is taking the role of assistant wide receivers coach with the Bengals.

This comes after Cincinnati made several moves of their coaching staff. In addition, they added Colt Anderson as an assistant special teams coach

It’s good to see Walters land on his feet, no matter what you thought of his coaching style. He was a decent offensive coordinator although at times his playcalling could be frustrating. The wide receivers did not have a great year either. However, I blame some of that on the quarterback play and the offensive line. If anything, Nebraska football got the most use out of its running backs last season. We really got to see the running game perform well last year. It certainly has placed high expectations on the unit for 2020.

Walters does not have a ton of weapons to work with. Tyler Boyd is definitely the top receiver on the team at the moment. Boyd caught  90 passes for 1,045 yards and five touchdowns. He averaged 11.6 yards per catch. Truth be told,  the wide receiving unit was not the best last season. However, the Cincinnati offensive line did not do the passing game any favors.

It will be interesting to see how Walters does in this role. The Bengals are team that has a lot of talent and a lot of young talent at that. They definitely need to get their offense moving in the right direction. The talent is there, they just need to execute. Walters definitely had some interesting ideas in terms of playcalling, Nebraska just could not execute. Hopefully, things will be different for him at the professional level.

Who knows, maybe he can parlay this position into something bigger. It would be great to see a former Nebraska football staff member have success at the next level. As always, Go Big Red.
