The cornerback should be a key piece for Nebraska football.

As the offseason begins for Nebraska football, the team definitely has high expectations for next season. You heard that last year as well. Even still, some of the veteran leaders are taking charge of a team that has many young, impressionable players.

More from Husker Corner

Perhaps more than anything, this team understands that success is a work in progress. Just ask quarterback DiCaprio Bootle. Bootle finished with 17 tackles, six pass deflections, and an interception last year. He certainly had a great year, and he is definitely looking to build off of that. As corner Lamar Jackson tries to take his talents to the NFL, Bootle will have to be a player that can fill the void. Of course, that is all that easier said than done. Even still, he showed at times last year that he could be an integral piece of the secondary.

Right now, he, along with the rest of the Nebraska football program, is trying to just get better each day. That’s a little bit of a changeup from last year. All of the players had very high goals, and they weren’t afraid to vocalize it to the media. That’s where the high expectations came from. Right now, Bootle just wants everybody to be better, one day at a time, as noted in a report from Brian Christopherson of 247Sports.

"“It’s definitely a process,” he added in the interview with Ben McLaughlin of the Husker Sports Network. “A lot of times when great things happen, you kind of have to build it from the ground up. Maybe tear it down to build it back up, to be able to elevate. I kind of think that’s where we were at here … The past two years there’s been a lot of good. There’s been some bad too. But we’re definitely moving in the right direction. I feel it. Everybody in this building feels it. We just need to continue to be humble and come ready to work every day. Everything else will take care of itself.”"

It’s kind of interesting to hear him talk like that. Often times, we have heard Nebraska football players be very confident in what they believe. That of course is fine. I am not trying to detract them from speaking their mind. However, there hasn’t been a lot of reflective musings at times, and that’s what it sounds like Bootle is doing here.

This Nebraska team will come into 2020 with many aspirations and goals. This is a very talented roster, there is no doubt about it. However, the schedule should also provide a challenge. Those two things should make for some very fun Saturdays ahead. I can’t wait to see what they can do. I truly believe that they can be successful.

For now, they are just building the pieces towards being successful. It sounds like Bootle knows that. It will be interesting to see how much this team develops over the course of the offseason.
