Nebraska football has a special player on their hands.

Logan Smothers is going to make an impact for Nebraska football. That much is evident. When you look at what he says to the media, and how badly he wants to play for this football program, you can’t help but get excited.

He is the newest quarterback commitment in what is becoming a very talented quarterback room. He possesses the same type of dual-threat ability that the other Nebraska quarterbacks have. There is no denying he has a ton of talent, and he should be in line to be a huge part of the program’s future.

In what is becoming a trend, Smothers is one of the more elite commitments that Nebraska has brought in recently. Quarterback is not an area that they have had trouble recruiting. If anything, the staff does a great job of identifying signal-callers that can play at a high level and that fit into what the team is trying to do. For his part, Smothers is really enamored with the Lincoln.

He is certainly a player that could start fairly soon, and he will definitely get a good look during the spring. Will he be able to start right away? I can’t say that for certain. There is a very talented group of quarterbacks on the roster. Nevertheless, he is keeping an open mind and enjoying the Nebraska football experience as he told Brian Christopherson of 247Sports.

"“From my first visit here, I loved every aspect of it: from the fans, to the coaches, to the style of offense they run,” Smothers said in a video released by the Husker athletic department in a series about the early enrollees. “I love Coach Frost, love Coach Verdu. Those guys, they’re going to make me the best quarterback I can possibly be. That’s what I want. I want to be with them and I want to win a national championship.”"

It’s awesome that he wants to win a national championship. From what I can tell, Luke McCaffrey has that same mindset as well. Smothers is not going to take anything for granted, and it sounds like he is really going to work hard to be the best quarterback possible. Usually when a starting quarterback has the potential to leave college early, we see a significant drop-off. It I really don’t think there will be a drop-off for Nebraska once Adrian Martinez leaves or graduates. If anything, I think the good quarterback play will continue for many years. The staff has proven to be very apt at recruiting the position.

I’ll be interested to see how he progresses through spring ball. That will be a great time for him to learn the offense and figure out how Nebraska football works. As a freshman, it will probably be a lot for him to take in. However, it sounds like he is ready to face the challenge. At the end of the day, that’s all you can ask for.
