Nebraska football introduced a new coach on Friday.
Well, that didn’t take long. Just a few hours after Nebraska football offensive coordinator Troy Walters announced that he would be leaving the program, the program found somebody to replace him. Matt Lubick is going to be the wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator.
This is a good hire for Nebraska. Lubick last coached at Washington, where he was the team’s a co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach in 2017 and 18. He was also on the Oregon coaching staff from 2013-2016. He spent four years with head coach Scott Frost while the both of them were there.
Lubbock certainly brings postseason experience to the Nebraska staff. Lubick has been a coach on teams that have six conference titles and 14 ballgame appearances. He was part of the staff that took Oregon to the 2014 College Football Playoff Championship Game.
I like the fact that this is a hire that Frost is familiar with. Both coaches will know what to expect out of each other. Not only that, they will be able to bounce ideas off each other. Hopefully the familiarity will lead to bigger success.
I also like how quick this hire was put into the place. With spring ball approaching rapidly, it wouldn’t be a good look to not have a receivers coach or coordinator. Now, Lubick can have an opportunity to get to know the players and go through the offseason program with them. That should only help once spring ball gets here.
I’ll be interested to see what type of job he does. He certainly has an impressive resume, but sometimes, that does not always lead to results. I’m confident in Lubick. He has been on a big stage and done well before. He has also gotten the most out of some of the teams he helped coach. Lubick is certainly a guy that can help bring a winning culture to the Nebraska football program.
