Nebraska Football will have their hands full in the opener.

A familiar face will be back at Memorial Stadium, he just will be on the opposing sideline. Purdue hired Bob Diaco to be their defensive coordinator on Monday, and Nebraska Football will play the Boilermakers in the season-opener next year.

Diaco was the defensive coordinator for Nebraska Football in 2017. Initially, he was thought to be a great higher. However, Nebraska went 4-8, and that certainly was discouraging. Combine that with the fact that Nebraska was paying him $825,000, and that only made things hurt a little bit more.

The defense was terrible overall. It started in the opening game, when Nebraska gave up 36 points to Arkansas State. Usually, the second game after a blowout leads to improvement. Instead, Nebraska got worse, surrendering 42 points to Oregon the next week. Those two games would serve as a preview for what the rest of the season was going to be like. The defense gave up more than 54 points four times.

It will be interesting to have Diaco back on the sidelines  when Nebraska Football takes on Purdue. Purdue is always a tough opponent as it is, and having Diaco lead the way is certainly not going to be easy. Despite what he did at Nebraska, there is no doubt that he was successful other places. Just look at what he did with Notre Dame. They went undefeated in 2012 and he won the Broyles award that year. He has been very successful as a defensive coordinator and I would expect the same here.

I can’t wait for the 2020 season and Purdue is definitely going to be a test. It will be a nice measuring stick for the program, and maybe even set the tone for the rest of the season. At the very least, Nebraska Football is not scheduling a cupcake opponent. Purdue figures to be a strong offensive and defensive team next year. A win for Nebraska would certainly exact a bit of revenge after what happened between the two teams last year. You can bet that Diaco will have his fingerprints all over this game, and I can’t wait to see how the Nebraska offense tries to counter his game plan.
