Kavas was able to give Nebraska Basketball a boost.

Saturday was undoubtedly a tough loss for Nebraska Basketball. They had chances to win the game, but they just could not put it away. However even in a tough loss, I feel it’s appropriate to recognize a positive from Saturday’s game. The play of Matej Kavas was a definite boost off the bench.

In 17 minutes of play, he recorded 12 points and a steal. He had an 80% field goal percentage and an 80% three-point percentage. He went four-of-five from behind the field and behind the arc. It’s tough to come off the bench and be that efficient. However, he was able to do so.

The 12-point outing marked his highest output in any game this season. He reached 11 points in the team’s loss to Creighton on December 7 and he has reached 10 points three times. He reached the 10-point plateau most recently against George Mason University on November 26 in the final game of the Cayman Islands Classic.  The senior guard is certainly making the most of his opportunities.

He had a career year for the Seattle Red Hawks last season. Averaging 10.8 points per game as well as 4.6 rebounds, he shot 45.8% from the field. Averaging 45.8% from behind the arc, last year proved that he makes an impact as a sharp-shooter. He certainly has done that for Nebraska as well, in what has been a limited role. There is definitely a possibility that his experience has made him so effective. He knows his job on the floor, and he knows exactly how to make an impact.

Next. Saturday's loss a step back. dark

Having someone who can be that consistent off the bench will certainly come in handy come conference play. I can tell it’s going to be a grueling slate as the Big 10 is stacked with talented basketball teams. Kavas should have a chance to make his mark as there will definitely be stretches when the starting guys need a breather or two. I’ll be interested to see how his experience and skill set help this Nebraska basketball team moving forward. So far, he is filling his role nicely.
