Nebraska Football: Program has three deserving Shrine Bowl invitees
Nebraska Football should be well represented at the Shrine Bowl.
With the Nebraska Football season coming to a close, the postseason accolades have begun to trickle in. For three Nebraska football seniors, they have been invited to the Shrine Bowl. Defensive ends Khalil and Carlos Davis as well as cornerback Lamar Jackson are going to the game, slated for the middle of January.
Khalil played in 36 games in his Nebraska Football career. His best season was this year, as he recorded 44 tackles and eight sacks as well as a pass deflection in 11 games played. Carlos played in 46 games for Nebraska Football. His best season came in 2017. He recorded 42 tackles that year in addition to 3.5 sacks. This season, he played in 11 games, recording 32 tackles and four sacks. In addition, he forced a fumble.
Jackson was able to have a tremendous final year. He served as the unquestioned leader of the secondary, in his statistics showed it. After what was a rough season for him in 2018, he managed to put it all together this year. He played in 12 games this year, recording 40 total tackles. Notching three interceptions, he also recorded a sack on the year. His 12 passes defended were the most in the Big Ten. His interceptions were second overall in the Big Ten. Those numbers are certainly not a bad way to round up what was a 40-game career in Lincoln.
This is a very talented group that has been invited. I loved seeing the emergence of Jackson this year, and that was great to see. I also loved the way Carlos was able to get to the passer a bit this year. At times, he was a key component of the pass rush. Khalil also finished his career off nicely, and he was able to be a strong veteran presence on the line.
Hopefully, all three of them find homes in the National Football League. This was a group that definitely would be able to translate in the NFL. Not only that, having three Nebraska football players in the NFL would be great for recruiting and also brings some pride to the program. It was awesome to see them succeed in Lincoln, and I’m happy that I got to watch them play. I will definitely be following the next steps in their careers, and I am confident in saying I will see the three of them on Sunday at some point.
