Nebraska Football has made the right move in locking up their head coach.
As the dust settles from the Nebraska Football loss on Saturday, there is some other news to report. Head coach Scott Frost has agreed to a seven-year extension that will keep him in Lincoln until 2026. The announcement came just before the team took on the Badgers, and after watching this game, I am glad he is it for the long haul.
There is a lot of work that needs to be done for this team to be successful. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and this program certainly needs some work. Particularly in recruiting, they need to get up to speed with the rest of the Big Ten. Signing Frost to a long-term deal is a smart move. After all, he has made it clear that he wants to turn the program around. Often times, continuity leads to success. In a crowded and talented conference like the Big Ten, constant turnover will not do Nebraska favors.
In the year two, there are signs of progress. However, there are still a lot of things to work on. Ensuring him long-term security allows him to build this program as he sees fit. Hiring and firing coaches year after year is not going to get done for Nebraska Football. They need some continuity. That is something they haven’t had in quite some time. It starts at the head coaching position, and as Frost himself said earlier, there is a lot of work to be done here.
"“This is where I want to be,” Frost said. “People in Nebraska know me pretty well, and I’m a fighter. I’m not going to quit until this is right. We took the Nebraska job as a staff because we figured we had the runway to build this and build it the right way.“In a lot of ways there was more work to be done than we even anticipated before we came to Lincoln, and there’s still things to do to get right.”"
Right now, the goal is to win two games and get to a bowl game. At the moment, that goal seems rather lofty. However, it is a goal to shoot for nonetheless. Getting into a bowl game would be a great step for Nebraska. With the type of competitor Scott Frost is, you can bet that he wants to get there as well.
This long-term deal ensures that Frost will be able to leave his stamp on the program, for better or for worse. He is the best option for Nebraska right now, and long-term security is exactly what both coach and program need. Some may think he is in over his head, while others may think he is not qualified to coach in the Big Ten. I say wait and see. I’ll probably make my official judgment after year three. I really like what he brings to the table and I think he can turn this thing around.
Evidently, Nebraska Football in the athletic department shares the same line of thinking. Congratulations Coach Frost, you now have the keys to the football program for the foreseeable future. Best of luck, you have a lot of work ahead of you. It may not be pretty, but I’m confident you can get the job done.
