Good on Nebraska Football for this decision.

The Blackshirt tradition has been instituted again this season for Nebraska Football. Some players have received the honor at the beginning of the season. Others have been bestowed the honor later in the year. No matter when a player has received it, it is certainly a great honor.

Tuesday, freshman linebacker Garrett Nelson was the recipient of a Blackshirt. You can tell by his reaction that he truly values the honor.

Nelson has recorded 10 total tackles on the year. He has assisted on eight of them, showing that he is not afraid to get in the middle of the action. His best game statistically came on October 12 against Minnesota. In that game, he recorded three tackles, two of which he assisted on. In every game he has played so far this season, he has made an impact. Hopefully, that bodes well for the future.

I really like Nelson as a player, as I believe he has great instincts. He also seems to be a very humble and hard-working kid. The Scottsbluff native certainly has tremendous potential. Measuring in at six-foot-three, 260 pounds, he has the body type to be a strong linebacker. I’m excited about the future at the position, and especially with players like Mohamed Barry leaving, he could figure to be a huge part of the equation moving forward.

This is what it’s all about right here. For that reason, I definitely think that the future is in good hands for Nebraska football. Although the defense has not performed up to par at times this season, that doesn’t mean it will be this way forever. Nelson is part of a valued freshman class that should leave the program in good hands in the coming years. I have been really excited about his potential, and he has shown it a bit this season. Hopefully, he can translate it into continued on-the-field success next year. Earning a Blackshirt as a freshman is certainly no small feat.

Kudos to Garrett Nelson. He has shown he is going to work hard for this team. That will certainly bode well for his success in the future, and I have a feeling he will have a lot of it. It’s always great to see a local kid work hard and live out his dreams. Hopefully, this is just a first milestone in a fruitful Nebraska Football career. This may not be what many of you want to hear right now, but the future is certainly bright.
