This may be a season long problem for Nebraska Basketball.

Admittedly, I was out for much of the day yesterday and I did not get to offer my thoughts on the Nebraska Basketball game. I saw it, and through all four frames of the game, one thing was apparent. The lack of rebounding for Nebraska Basketball reared its ugly head yet again.

I’m not exactly too worried about the team starting 0-2 in the Fred Hoiberg era. Like I said on Wednesday following the season-opening loss, this team will win these types of games. It’s just going to take time. I know it’s hard to find a silver lining in a loss, but the team looked a lot better yesterday than they did on Wednesday. Even if it seemed as though Nebraska kept missing shots ( which they did) I saw many positives. However, one negative really stood out to me , just like it did on Wednesday. The lack of rebounding by Nebraska was extremely noticeable.

More from Husker Corner

For the game, Southern Utah outrebounded Nebraska by a 58-44 margin. Although that’s not as bad as it could be, it’s definitely worse than it should be. Jervay Green and Cam Mack led the way in rebounds with six a piece for Nebraska. Yvan Ouedraogo also contributed five on the day. Even still, those efforts weren’t enough.

The team will definitely have to focus more on boxing out and making sure to not allow their opponent much space. I’d like to see Ouedraogo  have a bit more of a hand in the rebounding department. However, I understand that he is a player that is still very raw. As we all have to remember, many of these players are freshman. We will have to take the good with the bad in terms of growing pains, and right now we are seeing them be exposed in certain areas.

With that being said, there are a lot of good things that this team has done in the early going. However, they need to make sure they focus on rebounding. Second-chance points are a killer for any team and especially for Nebraska, they want to put themselves in the best position to win. As soon as they can clean up their efforts on the boards, they should be able to win some of the closer games moving forward. Especially in conference play, making sure to secure rebounds is crucial. That can make the difference between a win and a loss.
