A consistent defensive effort

I need to see more of a consistent effort from the defense this month. It’s frustrating to see them play well one week and then poorly the next. It seems like they have regressed at times, and that is never good.

Take last week’s game against Indiana for example. It seemed like the Hoosiers were able to read them like a book. Indiana tallied 351 yards through the air, and recorded 104 yards on the ground. Nevertheless, they wore down the Nebraska defense, recording 32:28 in possession time. In particular, one glaring statistic was Whop Philyor’s 178 receiving yards. That is certainly something Nebraska would like to forget.

It’s frustrating when you consider a performance like the one Nebraska had against Northwestern. They held the Wildcats to 136 receiving yards combined. The leading receiver for the Wildcats was Riley Lees. In that game, he recorded 48 receiving yards.

When Nebraska is on top of its game, the defense is flying around and disrupting plays before they begin. We haven’t seen a lot of that this month, and they need to do that consistently if Nebraska wants to make a bowl game. This team certainly has the talent to be successful, they just need to put it all together. Especially defensively, that unit needs to make a concerted effort to play better. Erik Chinander needs to focus on making in-game adjustments. That’s not something we saw a lot of last month either. As I alluded to last slide, it seems like it’s something they’re allergic to doing.
