Certainly an interesting development for Nebraska Football.
I may have written yesterday’s piece about Maurice Washington a little too prematurely. Nevertheless, I was looking at his potential second half of the season from a football standpoint. However, there was an interesting development on Monday. Washington is not listed on the team’s depth chart for Indiana per multiple media reports.
This could mean a couple of things. First, I’ll tell you I think it means. I think it means he is gone from the program. It was difficult to gauge exactly what Nebraska was going to do with Washington, especially considering head coach Scott Frost is so tight-lipped. There had been rumors flying around about Washington’s future with the program. Washington was productive while he was on the football field. This undoubtedly has more to do with his off-the-field issues. I could see where Nebraska just wants to free themselves from that distraction, at least for this week.
In terms of what this may mean from a football standpoint, this now handcuffs the running back position a little bit. Obviously, Nebraska has Wan’Dale Robinson to fill the main role. He will now be thrust into the spotlight. It’s not like he hasn’t had the spotlight before, he has excelled when given the opportunity. Now, he will receive ample playing time as a freshman. This can only help Robinson for the future. Robinson was banged up a little bit in the team’s last game against Minnesota. Hopefully, he is healthy and ready to go.
Washington needs to step back and get things together. He is obviously going through a lot of things right now. Although he is not listed on the depth chart for just Indiana alone, you have to wonder if this is the first step towards a permanent dismissal. Hopefully, things will be able to work out for Washington no matter how this situation ends up. I expect to hear more from head coach Scott Frost during his press conference on Monday.
This is certainly an interesting development. However, the loss of Washington is not one that Nebraska Football can’t overcome. They have the pieces to help them at running back. Hopefully, this will give other players a chance to step up and show everyone what they can do. Against a tough Indiana team, they certainly need to make the most of their opportunities.
It will be interesting to see how this situation develops and what it may mean for things moving forward. Hopefully, this situation will end with what works best for both parties.
