Nebraska Football received a commitment from a walk-on Sunday.

As many of you know, the walk-on tradition within the Nebraska Football program is a strong one. Sunday, they added another player to the commitment list. Hailing from Fremont Bergan, Eli Simonson  committed to the program. He made the announcement via Twitter earlier in the day

He is set to join teammate Keegan Menning as part of the 2020 walk-on class. Measuring in at six-foot-six, 260 pounds, Simonson is slated to be an offensive tackle once he arrives on campus.

This is certainly great news. Nebraska Football has built a very strong 2020 recruiting class. Combining that with a strong 2020 walk-on class, Nebraska is certainly trying to acquire talent from all areas. I have always loved the idea of walk-on’s becoming a part of the program. Often times, the walk-on’s are the players who have the most heart and drive to succeed. The 2020 season will be a crucial one for Nebraska.

We saw on Saturday night how much the offensive line needs to be a point of focus. Simonson would definitely be able to fill a need there. It will be interesting to see what his role is in the coming years. More specifically, it will be interesting to see if he can crack the starting lineup. Given the fact that there will probably be holes on the offensive line in the coming years, I could see where he could have the potential to do so.

On the other hand, he is a walk-on. As a result, he may be more of a project player. The coaching staff will definitely be able to mold him into a Division I lineman. With that size and height, he should be able to adjust relatively easily. I am excited that he is joining the team as I think he has a lot of potential. Now it is up to the coaching staff to put them in positions to succeed. More interestingly, it is up to them to make sure he fits what they are trying to do and work with his strengths.
