Nebraska Football plans to switch things up on Saturday

Nebraska Football is adding a wrinkle to their defense for Saturday. They have now added a nickleback according to multiple media reports.

JoJo Domann will play at the nickleback spot. This move is also significant because while Caleb Tannor is still the starting outside linebacker, freshman Garrett Nelson is now the second outside linebacker.

More from Husker Corner

I like this idea of adding more defenders on the field. For one, hopefully it will help in pass coverage. On Saturday, Nebraska Football got beaten numerous times by crossing routes and slants in the middle of the field. Hopefully, adding the nickleback will be able to curtail some of that. That gives you an extra defender that can drop back in coverage.

This move is significant for Domann. He has been playing really well. Particularly in the game against South Alabama, he was a force. He made several tackles and showed his great vision on several plays. He could definitely end up being one of the more impactful players on this defense. It’s great to see him perform like this. We sort of knew he was going to be special heading into the season, but we didn’t know how much of an impact he would make. We constantly brought up names like Mohamed Barry and put Domann’s name on the back burner.

For this season, Domann has six tackles and a pass deflection.

At the very least, adding another defensive player on the field can’t hurt. They need to do something to stop the passing games of their opponents. With the way Domann has been playing, he is certainly a viable option to help contain aerial threats.

It will be interesting to see how this is executed on Saturday. Nebraska Football is at least trying to make adjustments ahead of Saturday’s big game. I’ll give them credit for that. However, I want to see execution more than anything else. They have been promising execution for quite a while now, and they haven’t delivered. Now, it’s time to put up or shut up.
