The Nebraska Football offense needs to be better if they want to have success this season.

I know I said I wasn’t going to write, but I certainly have thoughts following Nebraska Football’s 34-31 overtime loss at the hands of Colorado. In what was a game that was fully up for grabs for Nebraska, they just could not come through.

Offensively, I noticed one particular issue today. The playcalling was certainly an issue. It felt like Nebraska relied on the run too much at times. For what it’s worth, Maurice Washington carried the ball 15 times for 77 yards. Averaging 5.1 yards a carry, he did a decent job. Martinez rushed the ball 19 times for 66 yards and he scored two touchdowns. However, I felt like the running game lacked creativity and production. It felt as though a run up the middle between the tackles was the

only play in the playbook. Then, when Nebraska did pass the ball, they didn’t seem to be in rhythm.

Quarterback Adrian Martinez had a decent day. Going 16-of-26 and throwing for two touchdowns and an interception, he certainly put up numbers. However, it seemed like he had tunnel vision. Maurice Washington and JD Spielman were his two main receivers on the afternoon. Washington caught four passes for 118 yards, while Spielman caught five passes for 112 yards. There is no doubt that they carried the load offensively. Martinez certainly needed to get his other receivers more involved.

It seems like Martinez is overthinking things out there. He needs to just get back to throwing the football . That may help the offense run efficiently and smoothly. Especially if Nebraska wants to focus on the running game, he needs to maximize his opportunities. Additionally, he needs to scan the whole field and look for his receivers. I only heard Kanawai Noa’s name once on the telecast Saturday.

Between vanilla playcalling and a quarterback overthinking, this Nebraska offense certainly has some things that they need to fix. Not only do they need to fix them, they need to fix them soon. This conference schedule is not going to be an easy one, and they need to right the ship before it’s too late. Some would argue that it is too late already, but I feel like they have a shot to make noise in the conference. Firstly, they need to address the offense. It is undoubtedly the “squeaky wheel” of this team right now. They have potential, they just need to execute.
