Sorensen has the potential to be an anchor for Nebraska Football in the future.

Nebraska Football scored their first commitment of the 2021 recruiting class, and it was a big one. Literally. 2021 defensive end RJ Sorensen measures in at six-foot-four, 230 pounds. Sorenson made the announcement of his commitment via Twitter.

Sorenson is not ranked in the 247Sports Composite Rankings, but he did have interest from a couple schools, including one that Nebraska Football will be playing next weekend.

More from Husker Corner

In addition to the Huskers, Colorado and Rutgers were also on his radar.

His recruitment is interesting. He first received an offer from Rutgers on May 16, and one from Colorado followed that same day. Although he committed to Nebraska Sunday, he knew he wanted to be a part of the program all along. He was recruited by tight ends coach Sean Beckton and defensive coordinator Eric Chinander.

"“I love the fan base, the history of the program,” Sorensen told 247Sports before going public with his decision. “I like Coach Frost and his whole staff including Coach T (defensive line coach Tony Tuioti) and the way they are rebuilding the program.”"

The reaction among the Nebraska Football coaches has been hilarious. Following the commitment, many members of the coaching staff tweeted their reactions. Running backs coach Ryan Held’s tweet pretty much summed up the mood of the entire staff.

What can Sorenson bring to Nebraska Football? When I watched some of his highlights, the first thing that stood out to me was his length. He uses his length to drive past offensive lineman. The second thing that stood out to me was his speed. In particular, he was effective coming off the edge. As soon as he got into a full sprint towards the quarterback, the offensive lineman had no chance at stopping him.

He could potentially be a defensive game changer for Nebraska Football, and with the amount of upperclassman currently on the roster, he certainly is a welcome addition. I was blown away by what I saw on his highlight tape, and hopefully he can continue to grow stronger and quicker.

This was a huge get for Nebraska. I can’t wait to see how they continue to try and make the program better.
