Nebraska Football is focusing on getting better at special teams.

Nebraska Football needs to improve on many things if they want to have a better season than the 4-8 campaign they had last year. From offense to defense, they want to play better in all facets of the game. Their focus and dedication over the course of training camp to this point has been impressive, and it seems like head coach Scott Frost has been pleased with the results.

One area which may not get much recognition but is extremely important is special teams. Special teams can make the difference between winning and losing a football game. Especially in terms of kick returns and field goals,  the art of special teams is crucial. Although Nebraska Football did fairly well in the special teams department last season, there is no doubt they need to get better. Particularly in the Big Ten Conference, every yard and change of field position matter.

More from Husker Corner

Special teams are something that Nebraska Football has been working on, and it is great to see that they are focusing on all aspects of the game. They certainly have the players practicing hard and trying to get better in all facets. If they can continue to get better on special teams, the Huskers will be a scary team heading into 2019. For a program with so much potential, a well-rounded skill set is exactly what they need.

According to coach Jovan Dewitt via a report from  Brian Christopherson of 247Sports he feels very comfortable with the way this unit is trending. This is certainly a good sign, and it sets a good precedent heading into the season. Of course, we will see it in game action in just a couple of weeks against South Alabama.

"“(We’re) so much more deeper. Absolutely. You’ve got a bunch more guys running down on kickoff that can run. We have certain standards that we want our guys to be at when the ball is kicked. We’re there more often than not, whereas a year ago, we weren’t.”"

That seems to be the mantra over the course of this training camp. Nebraska Football is certainly better than they were a year ago. Of course, all this hype and all this talk is going to be put to the test, but it seems like this team is a lot more focused and clear about what the expectations are. That clarity allows the program to focus on some of the smaller aspects of the game such as special teams. Although it may be a smaller part of the game, there is no doubt on what type of impact it can have on momentum and play overall.

The regular season is almost here, and it sounds like Nebraska Football is ready to play. I can’t wait to get things going, and I am excited to see if this team can live to the buildup that has been surrounding them. They should be able to, as they have talent at every single position. It’s been far too long without college football, I certainly am ready for the games to begin.
