Nebraska Football is adding a linebacker to the fold.

Nebraska Football may be getting some new talent very soon. Former Colorado State linebacker Zach Schlager is said to be headed to Lincoln this week.

According to a report from The Coloradoan, Schlager made this choice on Saturday. After participating in Colorado’s State’s scrimmage, he put his name in the transfer portal.

Not much is known about him in terms of play. He signed with Colorado State in the 2018 season. He appeared in four games last season and elected to use the new NCAA rule that allowed him to redshirt with only four games under his belt. He will have to sit out in the 2019 season and will be eligible for three years starting in the 2020 campaign.

What does this mean for Nebraska Football? They have a lot of talent and up-and-coming players, but depth is certainly an issue at linebacker right now. This season, they should be fine. They have names like Mohamed Barry and JoJo Domann , and they should be able to make the most of the opportunities they get. Starting next year, that is when a depth is going to be interesting. With the younger players like Jackson Hannah, there is certainly options for the future. However, adding a linebacker to the roster is certainly a smart move for Nebraska. Particularly with how the injury bug has bitten Nebraska as of late, it is better to be safe than sorry.

This is a bit of a homecoming for Schleicher. He is from McCook, Nebraska. As a member of the class of 2018, he was the fourth overall player in the state of Nebraska per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He committed to Colorado State on April 25, 2017. Measuring in at six-foot-one, 211 pounds, he certainly fits the body type of a linebacker. These days, coaches want smaller linebackers who have a bit of speed in addition to muscle. Schleicher certainly has both.

This is a great development for Nebraska Football and will definitely help them. To make matters even better, he is heading to the program while they’re in the middle of camp. This will give him time to get acclimated to his surroundings, and start learning the playbook. This could be another tremendous under-the-radar get for Scott Frost and his coaching staff. It will be interesting to see how they use him in their defense, and what type of role he will play in the future of this program.
