Nebraska Football might have another freshman sensation on their hands.

Much ado has been made about this incoming freshman defensive class. Nebraska Football certainly recruited some diamonds in the rough, and they should be able to make an impact not only right now, but certainly in the future.

Quentin Newsome is one of the players that could definitely help the defense keep trending upward. The freshman from North Gwinnett High School put together a solid resume during his time on the gridiron. In his junior season of 2017-2018, he really began to break out. In 14 games, he recorded 49 tackles. 40 of them were solo, and nine of them were assisted. Averaging 3.5 tackles per game, he also managed to record one tackle for a loss per contest.

His senior season was just a continuation of what was a successful high school career. In nine games, he recorded 32 solo tackles, notching 39 in all. In addition, he showed a knack for finding the football, batting down a total of 19 passes in his three seasons for North Gwinnett. He was an impact player all over the gridiron. He certainly fits the image that Nebraska Football is trying to mold in the secondary.

This new Nebraska Football secondary wants to play aggressively. In addition to playing aggressively, they also want to make it difficult for quarterbacks to throw their way. Newsome certainly has the capabilities do that. He wasn’t an interception machine during his high school career, but he still showed enough polish and athleticism to be considered a shutdown corner.

Head coach Scott Frost likes what he sees from his cornerback. As Brian Christopherson of 247Sports wrote, the whole staff seems to recognize his potential. Secondary coach Travis Fisher saw Newsome working out at the corner position, while many projected he would be a safety. Nebraska hopes that their positional evaluation is able to pay dividends. So far, it seems like it is. Fisher had nothing but nice things to say about the freshman when he spoke to the media earlier in the week.

"“He has very quick feet,” Fisher said. “Understands the game for a young guy. He competes at a high level and makes plays on the ball and that’s something that we’ve struggled with in the past. He adds that attribute to our secondary of being able to make plays on the ball. He’s not afraid to compete and step right up there.”“I have some guys, where you have a one and a 1A. Then you have a 1B. Quinton Newsome, he can easily be a 1A,” Fisher said."

That’s some pretty high praise, especially for a freshman. With the secondary being so deep right now, I find it hard to believe that he will get significant playing time in the coming season. However, you never know. If he continues to play at an upward trajectory, he will be a part of the secondary in no time.

Newsome has skill, talent, and the will to succeed. Now, it’s just about being  able to make impact plays when it matters most. The same could be said of the entire team. With all the work they have been putting in, they truly have a shot to surprise many this upcoming season.
