Nebraska Football: Luke McCaffrey being lauded as a hard worker
The Nebraska Football freshman is taking all the right steps to succeed.
For Nebraska Football, they are about to be tested in what should be an exciting 2019 season. For some of the players within the program, the concept of testing is taken quite literally. Just ask quarterback Luke McCaffrey.
McCaffrey comes into the Nebraska Football program with a lot of hype surrounding him. He is thought to be next in line in what has been a successful string of quarterbacks for Nebraska. He has tremendous talent and an arm and mobility that should take both himself and the program places in the years to come.

Quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco assigned McCaffrey a playbook test recently. 722 questions in length, the test is certainly not for an individual who hasn’t been studying the playbook. By Verduzco’s account, McCaffrey did extremely well on the test. Usually, I wouldn’t read too much into this, but the coach’s words certainly speak volumes about McCaffrey’s work habits.
So far, McCaffrey’s working habits have been good. In the spring, he reportedly impressed the coaches with his ability to be a quick learner. This is great news, as current quarterback Adrian Martinez will probably leave the program sooner rather than later. Especially if he has a good season in 2019, he could see his NFL draft stock rise sharply. It would be great to have another Nebraska Football player in the NFL, especially since none were drafted last year. Nevertheless, undrafted free agent signings like linebacker Luke Gifford and running back Devine Ozigbo certainly make up for the lack of draftees.
In an interview with Parker Gabriel of the Lincoln Journal Star, Verduzco talked about McCaffrey’s success on the test. The coach certainly sounds impressed by the results.
"“I mean, it was out of sight,” Verduzco said. “It was really, really, really, really good. As good as I’ve ever been around for a young guy, coming in and being able to handle 722 questions on a playbook test and missing, really, very, very few. It was unbelievable.”"
This love of learning could certainly help him in the quarterback battle, and the fact that he has retained so much information already is great. I certainly see him being a successful quarterback for the program down the road. Nebraska Football has hit the proverbial nail on the head with their quarterback recruiting in recent years, and it doesn’t look like that is going to change. Of course, I want to see him in game action, but this type of endorsement is certainly a good start for him.
Luke McCaffrey could be really special. Coming from an athletic family, it appears that hard work and determination is in his blood. He is certainly taking all the right steps to succeed so far. Especially as a freshman, making a good first impression is important. If he can continue his tremendous work ethic, the sky is truly the limit for him.
